What is a Brand?

This one is a bit of fun! I’ll admit it…I’m a sucker for quotations. So, here’s at least a partial answer to this question using some of my favourite quotes from speakers, authors, and business folk. The very last quote below is my current favourite!

“Branding is the art of aligning what you want people to think about your company with what people actually do think about your company. And vice-versa.” — Jay Baer, founder of Convince & Convert

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” — Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway

“If you don’t give the market the story to talk about, they’ll define your brand’s story for you.” — David Brier, branding and brand identity expert, designer, speaker, blogger and author of Brand Intervention

“Don’t push people to where you want to be; meet them where they are.” — Meghan Keaney Anderson, VP Marketing, HubSpot

“Instead of one-way interruption, web marketing is about delivering useful content at just the right moment that a buyer needs it.” — David Meerman Scott, Keynote Speaker & Author

“Build trust and earn attention. The entity that get the most trust will get the most customers.” — Seth Godin, Bestselling Author, Entrepreneur & Speaker

“Adversity in business is inevitable, but it’s how you deal with hardship that helps your brand stand out from the competition. People—both customers and staff—rally behind brands that learn from their mistakes and rise above challenges.” — Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, author, and philanthropist

“Brand is the sum total of how someone perceives a particular organization. Branding is about shaping that perception.” — Ashley Friedlein, founder and CEO of Guild

“A brand is emotional shorthand for accumulated or assumed information. A brand is present when the value of what a product, service, or personality means to its audience is greater than what it does for the audience.” – Austin McGhie

“A relationship without trust is like a cellphone with no service. All you can do is play games”
