Today, someone asked me, “What’s one key branding strategy you find most impactful for entrepreneurs who are just starting to scale?”
If I had to pick just one, it would be this: “Establish your foundation before building anything else.”
Your mission and vision statements are the bedrock of that foundation—defining who you are, what you do, how you do it, and why it matters. Each plays a unique role: your mission captures the now, while your vision charts the path forward. Together, they shape everything from your brand positioning and promise to your story, personality, and voice.
Only after this foundation is solid should you dive into design choices like colours and logos! 😉
But here’s the common pitfall: mission and vision statements are often either “overlooked” or “overcooked.”
Overlooked? 👀
You’d be surprised how many businesses skip this step entirely. Without a clear mission and vision, it’s like trying to build a house with no blueprint. These statements are meant to do more than guide your marketing—they define your purpose and your direction.
Overcooked? 🔥
On the other hand, some statements try too hard and end up much too long—often a sign of uncertainty. A strong mission and vision should be short, snappy, and memorable—just 1-2 sentences max. In my experience, everything else that someone tries to shove in is meant to fill out the core of your brand. That’s what comes between the foundation and your logo and colours! When you refine them to be clear and concise, you’ll exude a confidence that resonates with both your team and your clients.
So, how about you? Are your mission and vision statements working hard for your business—or could they use a little love?
